3. Contains an explanation regarding how this component (any aspect of it; eg content of videos, content of websites) connects to your study of humanities. .25 point

This assignment contributes to our study of humanities because it explores a major feature of California—its beaches. California’s culture and history involves many of its beaches. They are not only a natural addition to the land but they are also a popular part of social recreation. California is only one of the few states to contain beaches and it is these shorelines that have contributed to the state’s individuality.

4. Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:

a. What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point

I think a stereotype that people have of Bodega Bay is that it is a cold, windy beach with shark-infested waters. I also believe that many assume its only attributes are the rocky cliffs and offshore fishing. Some labels that might be given to Huntington Beach are sun and beautiful people. Any sort of recreation could be narrowed down to sunbathing, volleyball, and tanning.

b. List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point

Three things that make Bodega Bay and Huntington Beach similar are both have been the location of different films and movies; American Indians inhabited both beaches before European settlement, and both beaches are home to coastal cities with many residents.

c. List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point

Three things that make Bodega Bay and Huntington Beach different are that Bodega Bay is parallel to the San Andreas fault line and Huntington Beach is parallel to a coastal wetland: popular recreation for Bodega Bay includes fishing and for Huntington Beach it is surfing and kite surfing and Bodega Bay has a much colder climate in comparison to Huntington Beach’s often sunny, mild climate.

d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point

I do know that Huntington Beach has some of the best surf breaks in the United States but I would like to know just how often surf competitions are held on the beach’s coastline. I also know that Bodega Bay was originally home to the Miwok Indian tribe but I would like to know if there are any remaining tribe members that still reside in its surrounding area.

5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? Is this one thing related to our class theoretical foundation and if so, how? Is that one thing related to historical or cultural context of this country or a different one? Link that persons blog to this entry (eg cut paste that blog entry here) . .5 point

After reading Cathy’s blog, I learned that over half of France’s business takes place in Paris. This is a completely different experience from my own. I have never traveled to Europe and therefore know very little about most of its countries’ history. This relates to our class because learning and comparing the economic and social makeup of other countries will help one to gain insight about his or her own country. This fact relates to both the historical and cultural context of another country—France.
