3. Contains a brief paragraph how it connects to your study of humanities. 1 point
My field trip destination relates to the studies of humanities because it is an institute of education. Not only does Paolo Freire highlight the importance of education but also the students of California universities. San Diego State University is one of the first universities built in California, an important part of the state’s culture. SDSU ranks among the top ten universities nationwide in terms of ethnic and racial diversity among its student body, yet another important aspect of humanities. Diversity and education are both stressed in humanities. They are an important part of the world and should not be overlooked.
a. Observation
San Diego State University is a huge campus. Tiled roofs and Spanish-style white stucco greet students throughout the school year. The buildings resemble old Spanish missions, creating a historical atmosphere fused with a contemporary flare. Palm trees litter the landscape, providing little shade from the sun’s bright rays. Hints of red and black peek out from the hallways and venues, bringing a sense of school spirit to the extensive campus. Located on a hillside area, a highway surrounds most of the area, followed by residential neighborhoods and finally a wide stretch of beautiful beach. Major architectural features include a striking bell tower, an open-air amphitheater, and a sleek pedestrian bridge.
b. Interpretation
My choice is about the importance of educational institutions and their effect on each generation. San Diego State is the only state university with the classification of a research college, providing an abundance of resources to stimulate mental growth and cultural affluence.
c. Judgment
I decided to choose San Diego State because it was originally a school I had considered attending right out of high school. Instead I decided to attend Santa Rosa JC to save money and finish my general education. Knowing that I am only a semester away from transferring, I recently visited the university to explore the campus because it was an option for school that I was highly considering on attending my junior year. Although I love the weather of San Diego and the diverse campus, I settled on a college that was closer to home. While I explored the school, I felt it was a friendly and inviting campus. Its mission-style architecture captured the essence and traditional history of the city of San Diego. I felt that by doing more research on the school through this assignment I could look past the physical campus features and further into the records and educational contributions of the school.
d. Questioning
I know that SDSU offers the most doctoral degrees of any campus of the California State University system, but I would like to which discipline offers the best programs?
5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student.
After I read Katy’s assignment, I realized that she also decided on “visiting” the Legion of Honor for her online fieldtrip. Just like me she commented on how she feels privileged to have such a wonderful museum so close to her home. Again, we both share the same feeling and appreciation for art so this museum is undeniably an artist’s treasure. This is related to our class’s theoretical foundation because it is an institute for collective expression and communication. Again, it also relates to the historical and cultural context of this country because the Legion recognizes the art world from centuries past as well as present. It is a showcase for the artistic genius, an important part of an American way of life.
