2. Contains an explanation regarding how this component (any aspect of it; eg content of videos, content of websites) connects to your study of humanities. .25 point
The research component of this assignment relates to our studies of humanities because it allows us to examine California culture with an objective point of view. We are asked to consider possible stereotypes that others may have. This leads us to assess different parts of California in order to counter false pretenses. By doing so we are submerging ourselves in the historical background and rich traditions of our state’s diverse districts. Most importantly it allows us to gain an appreciation for regions of California that we normally might not have had before the assignment.
3. Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:
a. What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point
Some stereotypes about Davis are its size and economy. Many consider it a very small town full solely of college students. Many also believe that livestock make up half of the population because the town prides itself in its agricultural-based economy. I think many assume the town’s only real attributes are their agriculture and University. Some stereotypes about Palm Springs might be that it is a desert full of wealthy retirees. Besides the occasional casino and nice spas many may assume that there is not much to this desert oasis.
b. List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point
Both Davis and Palm Springs grew and developed around the Southern Pacific Railroad-- each with the intention of railroad use. Davis and Palm Springs are both located a little over an hour away from major coastal cities. Davis is about 72 miles away from San Francisco and Palm Springs is 111 miles from Los Angeles. Davis and Palm Springs are both homes to community colleges as well as relatively close California State Universities. Davis is only a couple miles away from California State University, Sacramento and Palm Springs is only a couple miles away from California State University, San Bernardino.
c. List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point
Because Palm Springs is sheltered by three different mountain ranges, it has a very hot, dry desert-like climate. Davis on the other hand has a more varied, Mediterranean climate with dry, hot summers and cold winters. Palm Springs is known for its mid-century modern architecture where as Davis is recognized for its University and small, college-based town. Palm Springs residents rely on cars for transportation. Davis’s main form of transportation is by bike. UC Davis and the rest of the town is so saturated with bicycles, that the city and college campus have created numerous bike lanes, bike paths, bike round-abouts and bike crossings.
d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point
I know that despite Davis’s small town size it has quite a large population. I would like to know if this population has increased over time because of UC Davis students. I also know that Palm Springs’s economy now relies on tourism but I would like to know what was the main source of income during the city’s earlier years.
5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? Is this one thing related to our class theoretical foundation and if so, how? Is that one thing related to historical or cultural context of this country or a different one? After reading Lindsey’s blog I learned that Seal Beach was named after the seals that once swam its waters. This information was interesting to me because I grew up in Seattle and as a little girl I would visit Puget Sound and watch the seals that would occasionally migrate down from Alaska. This is related to our class and California’s cultural context because seals are a part of the state’s coastal wildlife. It is an important part of the environment and is a social incentive to keep our beaches clean.

Assignment 3b: Beaches: Bodega Bay vs. Huntington Beach
2. Contains a web link to your locations. (eg you can use the tools in your blog where you paste your work; there is a little icon that looks like a link) .25 points

3. Contains an explanation regarding how this component (any aspect of it; eg content of videos, content of websites) connects to your study of humanities. .25 point
This assignment contributes to our study of humanities because it explores a major feature of California—its beaches. California’s culture and history involves many of its beaches. They are not only a natural addition to the land but they are also a popular part of social recreation. California is only one of the few states to contain beaches and it is these shorelines that have contributed to the state’s individuality.
4. Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:
a. What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point
I think a stereotype that people have of Bodega Bay is that it is a cold, windy beach with shark-infested waters. I also believe that many assume its only attributes are the rocky cliffs and offshore fishing. Some labels that might be given to Huntington Beach are sun and beautiful people. Any sort of recreation could be narrowed down to sunbathing, volleyball, and tanning.
b. List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point
Three things that make Bodega Bay and Huntington Beach similar are both have been the location of different films and movies; American Indians inhabited both beaches before European settlement, and both beaches are home to coastal cities with many residents.
c. List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point
Three things that make Bodega Bay and Huntington Beach different are that Bodega Bay is parallel to the San Andreas fault line and Huntington Beach is parallel to a coastal wetland: popular recreation for Bodega Bay includes fishing and for Huntington Beach it is surfing and kite surfing and Bodega Bay has a much colder climate in comparison to Huntington Beach’s often sunny, mild climate.
d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point
I do know that Huntington Beach has some of the best surf breaks in the United States but I would like to know just how often surf competitions are held on the beach’s coastline. I also know that Bodega Bay was originally home to the Miwok Indian tribe but I would like to know if there are any remaining tribe members that still reside in its surrounding area.

After reading Cathy’s blog, I learned that over half of France’s business takes place in Paris. This is a completely different experience from my own. I have never traveled to Europe and therefore know very little about most of its countries’ history. This relates to our class because learning and comparing the economic and social makeup of other countries will help one to gain insight about his or her own country. This fact relates to both the historical and cultural context of another country—France.

3. Contains an explanation regarding how this component (any aspect of it; eg content of videos, content of websites) connects to your study of humanities. .25 point
This assignment relates to our study of humanities because it compares cities and cultures within the state of California. By discovering the similarities and differences, you can understand more about the diversity that our state provides. In order to appreciate where you live you must understand all aspects of your region, within and outside of your own town or city.
4. Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:
a. What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point
I think some stereotypes that people have of San Francisco is that it is a city full of carefree hippies. Because of its 1960’s “love era”, people still believe that the city revolves around this previous attitude. Also, because of its high percentage of gay citizens and the city's active participation in gay rights movements, I think that others often assume that the whole city’s population is either gay or lesbian.
Some stereotypes that people have for Los Angeles is that everyone is tan, blonde, and beautiful. Many think that celebrities flock the streets and that the paparazzi swarm the town. I think that some other stereotypes that people have of LA is that everyone spends their free time at the beach either surfing or tanning.
b. List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point
Both cities are located near the coast and the ocean.
Each city is located along the San Andreas Fault, which has been the cause of many earthquakes.
The climates of each city are considered to be Mediterranean—hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
c. List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point
San Francisco uses cable cars and the Muni as part of its major public transportation and Los Angeles uses the subway system and buses.
The most popular structural feature of San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Hollywood hills sign is the most recognizable of LA’s structures.
Los Angeles is primarily known for its entertainment culture and San Francisco is known for its culturally rich streetscapes.
d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point
I know that San Francisco is known for its hills, but I would like to know if some of these hills have been the result of earthquakes? I also know that Los Angeles is home to people from more than 140 countries speaking 224 different identified languages, but I would like to know what is the largest form of appeal for such a diverse group of residents?

Last week I learned Kendra’s assignment that Redwood trees can live to be 2,000 years old! I was amazed that California is home to such amazing natural wonders. I have visited different national forests and still am amazed by the enormity of a redwood’s stature. This is related to our state’s environmental culture as well as its natural resources.

2c: San Diego State University
2. Contains the sources you used with links to these sources .25 points
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Diego_State_University
3. Contains a brief paragraph how it connects to your study of humanities. 1 point
My field trip destination relates to the studies of humanities because it is an institute of education. Not only does Paolo Freire highlight the importance of education but also the students of California universities. San Diego State University is one of the first universities built in California, an important part of the state’s culture. SDSU ranks among the top ten universities nationwide in terms of ethnic and racial diversity among its student body, yet another important aspect of humanities. Diversity and education are both stressed in humanities. They are an important part of the world and should not be overlooked.
a. Observation
San Diego State University is a huge campus. Tiled roofs and Spanish-style white stucco greet students throughout the school year. The buildings resemble old Spanish missions, creating a historical atmosphere fused with a contemporary flare. Palm trees litter the landscape, providing little shade from the sun’s bright rays. Hints of red and black peek out from the hallways and venues, bringing a sense of school spirit to the extensive campus. Located on a hillside area, a highway surrounds most of the area, followed by residential neighborhoods and finally a wide stretch of beautiful beach. Major architectural features include a striking bell tower, an open-air amphitheater, and a sleek pedestrian bridge.
b. Interpretation
My choice is about the importance of educational institutions and their effect on each generation. San Diego State is the only state university with the classification of a research college, providing an abundance of resources to stimulate mental growth and cultural affluence.
c. Judgment
I decided to choose San Diego State because it was originally a school I had considered attending right out of high school. Instead I decided to attend Santa Rosa JC to save money and finish my general education. Knowing that I am only a semester away from transferring, I recently visited the university to explore the campus because it was an option for school that I was highly considering on attending my junior year. Although I love the weather of San Diego and the diverse campus, I settled on a college that was closer to home. While I explored the school, I felt it was a friendly and inviting campus. Its mission-style architecture captured the essence and traditional history of the city of San Diego. I felt that by doing more research on the school through this assignment I could look past the physical campus features and further into the records and educational contributions of the school.
d. Questioning
I know that SDSU offers the most doctoral degrees of any campus of the California State University system, but I would like to which discipline offers the best programs?
5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student.
After I read Katy’s assignment, I realized that she also decided on “visiting” the Legion of Honor for her online fieldtrip. Just like me she commented on how she feels privileged to have such a wonderful museum so close to her home. Again, we both share the same feeling and appreciation for art so this museum is undeniably an artist’s treasure. This is related to our class’s theoretical foundation because it is an institute for collective expression and communication. Again, it also relates to the historical and cultural context of this country because the Legion recognizes the art world from centuries past as well as present. It is a showcase for the artistic genius, an important part of an American way of life.
